Congratulations to Sung-Chan Ku and Nurul Annisa for publishing their article, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Shonn Cheng, in the Current Psychology: “Equity matters for academic performance in online learning: The roles of motivational beliefs and prior experience.”

This study addressed the gap in understanding how perceived equity and other features of the online learning environment relate to students’ motivation and academic performance. Using a sample of 146 students enrolled in an online undergraduate computer science course, we found that instructor support and perceived equity were positively related to final course grades through academic self-efficacy, with stronger relations among students with more prior online learning experience. Notably, perceived equity was also positively related to final course grades through a decrease in perceived costs and showed the strongest association with academic success, whereas peer interaction was not related to final course grades. These results highlight the critical role of perceived equity in shaping students’ motivation and academic performance in online learning and emphasize the importance of designing online courses that foster inclusion and support students’ motivational needs.
